Cap’n Crunch

“Fourever”

In 2023, Cap’n Crunch made a notable appearance at Comic-Con, in San Diego. For years, fans had expressed concerns regarding Cap’n’s uniform – specifically that a real captain should have four stripes on their sleeve. With the exciting news that the Cap’n would finally receive his fourth stripe, I was tasked with creating a teaser for Comic-Con.

Collaborating with the Quaker team at FleishmanHillard, we developed a dynamic, superhero-themed teaser poster that would be unveiled prior to the event. I began with a series of sketches, exploring how we could highlight his new stripe. The clients desired a Marvel-inspired aesthetic, appropriate for ComicCon, while maintaining the cartoonish-style aligned with the brand’s established guidelines.

After reviewing the initial sketches, we opted for a close-up salute pose that emphasized the Cap’n’s stripes. For the design process, I utilized ZBrush for the initial sculpt of the body, SideFX Houdini for the creation of the stripes, fabric textures, and render, and finally, Adobe Photoshop for the final compositing, effects, and poster design elements.

A street team of Cap’n Crunch look-a-likes then made sure that the poster was plastered all over the streets of San Diego on Comic-Con weekend.
